Ice Dams Are A Winter Problem, And You Have Time To Prepare

Ice dams are totally preventable. They are caused by inadequate air sealing and insulation between the living space of your home and the attic. In the winter when you warm the inside of your home against winters freezing cold, the warm air bleeds off into the attic creating a warm zone. That warm zone causes snow to melt at the peak area of your roof. The melting snow makes its way down the pitch of your roof where it encounters a colder section of near the roofs edge. The melted snow re-freezes into ice and begins to accumulate in thickness. As the snow continues to melt at the peak of your roof, it works its way down the roof where it is trapped by the ice and accumulates into a small reservoir of water. The last phase of preventing ice dams in Minneapolis is to install roof vents that allow hot air to escape. When attic air stays cool, it does not warm the roof and melt the snow.
